We presently have a full-time opening at our Elkmont, Alabama Manufacturing Plant for a Tool & Die Maker. The hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. central time with overtime, including weekends as maybe needed for the business operations. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all tool and die activities in the facility are appropriately carried out, maintaining and upholding Snap-on safety standards , keeping a record of all tooling  activities conducted,   ensuring proper working shifts and coverage of associates, providing input when evaluating tooling room associate’s performance, interacting with other departments to ensure the proper functioning of all systems that are supported by the tooling function and generating and implementing improvement ideas in overall organizational tooling .

Responsibilities

  • Assist in instilling a zero tolerance for unsafe conditions and/or unsafe acts.  A leader by example of “Safety First”.
  • Ensures adherence to company safety standards, policies and procedures. Ensures maintenance staff correctly wears and uses safety equipment, as required. Also, ensures that all safety inspections are completed as required and ensures adherence to company key control policies.
  • Safety knowledge/record for machines typical of a general machine shop and production environment

Tool Room

  1. Respond urgently during production hours in performing duties to assist production personnel and conscious of cost and impact of downtime on equipment
  2. Ability to make tools and dies for forging, punching, milling, drilling, and other metal forming, die casting and metal cutting work.
  3. Ability to perform modifications and repairs to damaged tools
  4. Set up and operate a wide variety of machine tools and related equipment.
  5. Keep storage and shop areas in 6s condition

Productive Equipment

 

  • Maintain sufficient inventories of tools, parts and supplies in order to properly maintain the facility.

Leadership / Motivation

  • Works with production associates to develop an effective, proactive team that works together to achieve facility objectives.
  • Works with tooling staff to ensure that tooling issues are dealt with in a timely manner.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Two-year technical degree and four year tool and die apprenticeship or equivalent of minimum 5 years’ experience in tool and die
  • High level of "out-of-the-box" thinking and evaluation of existing and needed/possible work processes
  • Must be able to thrive in a "self directed and take ownership of responsibility" type of work environment
  • Layout and plan work from mechanical drawings, models, rough sketches or other oral and written specifications.
  • Knowledge of mild steel, stainless steel, tool steel, and aluminum
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude is a must
  • Safety knowledge/record for machines typical of a general machine shop and production environment
  • Utilizes precision measuring instruments to check accuracy of work
  • Work to close tolerances on tools of intricate design.
  • Use a variety of tool and die maker’s hand tools and measuring instruments
  • Understand the working properties of common metals and alloys.
  • Has knowledge of shrinkage and draft and heat-treating of metal parts during fabrication as well as of finished tools and dies to achieve required results.

Preferred

 

  • Programming using MasterCAM
  • Haas and Doosan CNC lathe and mill experience
  • Manual lathe and mill experience
  • Knowledge of OD/ID grinders
  • Wire EDM and EDM sinker experience
  • Knowledge of MIG and TIG welding skills
  • Knowledge and application of "continuous business improvement" type methodology, practices, and the application thereof
  • MS office (Work, Excel etc.)
  • Injection mold repair and maintenance knowledge

 

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions are:  - Sitting, bending, standing and/or walking for an extended period of time, Light lifting on a repetitive basis or lifting on an occasional basis of approximately 30 lbs, Visual acuity, Depth perception,  Eye-hand coordination,  Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time and the ability to withstand work temperature changes.
