Overview

Responsible for setting strategic direction for database solutions within the global SBS organization. Work closely with the architecture, application, publishing, and other I/T global teams to ensure we are providing the right service level as well as be engaged as a partner as solutions and architectures are decided upon. Manage, control, and administrator the operations of the global database team. Set directions and have responsibility for evaluation, recommendation, and implementation for alternative approaches to support client requirements and customer service offerings. Participate in the database design life cycle from idea phase through release into post release and maintenance. Responsible for making recommendations on establishment of standards and policies, capacity management and planning, backup/restore management, budget preparation assistance, and technology thought leadership. Reviews and evaluates the work of staff and prepares quarterly performance reports. Manages multiple projects, professional and technical staff, and other related activities of the area. Serves as a backup to the Director of IT where appropriate.

Responsibilities

 

  • Manage global operations (North America and India) and administrative activities of database computing environments.
  • Serve as a technical resource and focal point for publishing, application, and architecture teams and provide problem resolution for supported infrastructure.
  • Review performance and capacity management reports and work closely with other areas of I/T to resolve issues and develop solutions for new capacity needs/requirements. Recommend database system monitoring and performance tuning activities.
  • Leads and coordinates change management and planning activities for group.
  • Sits on IT change management committee.
  • Recommend standards for configurations, patching and patch level synchronization, for the Oracle Enterprise and corresponding suite of offerings, Microsoft SQL Server, Transbase, PostgreSQL, EnterpriseDB PostgreSQL, and any other applicable database environment.
  • Provide general supervision to direct and dotted line reports for individuals in Richfield, Ohio; Reading, U.K. and Noida, India. Monitor and evaluate performance, conduct disciplinary discussions when necessary, make compensation adjustment and merit increase recommendations, etc.
  • Insure that the information assets of the Company and the commercial clients are protected at all times.
  • Conduct periodic planning sessions with publishing, application, and architecture teams, business unit leaders, and internal teams to guide direction within standards.
  • Maintain/enhance technical expertise and industry knowledge including database technologies, publishing tools, Solaris/Linux technologies, storage networks, enterprise backup, and process improvement tools and techniques.
  • Identify and alert management of problems that will impact progress on projects and other activities.
  • Familiar with the European GDPR and other international regulations for the storage of personal and/or sensitive data.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience, post graduate experience preferred. Related work experience and industry recognized certifications will be considered.
  • Eight (8) or more years of extensive experience in database and infrastructure/information services activities leading and/or managing the efforts of technical specialists.
  • Experience with database related technologies.
  • Experience with DBMS systems in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Transbase and PostgreSQL a plus.
  • Experience with application development tools preferred.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with enterprise storage area networks. Hitachi and EMC solutions are a plus.
  • Experience with enterprise backup/restore solutions. Symantec NetBackup is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work with clients, technical staff, and vendors.
  • Excellent problem solving and consultative skills.
  • Excellent planning, project management and implementation skills.
  • Ability to travel to remote company locations or for other business related needs as required.
  • Ability to carry a mobile device and provide off hours support as required.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds of equipment.
